India Distances Itself as Trump Pushes for Nobel Peace Prize Over India-Pakistan Talks

India has responded to claims from the White House that U.S. President Donald Trump helped bring peace between India and Pakistan. The Indian government said the question should be directed to the White House. While Pakistan praised Trump and nominated him for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, India insists the peace efforts were done directly between the two countries. The Nobel Committee has not commented on Trump’s nomination. On Friday, the Indian government said that questions about the push for giving US President Donald Trump a Nobel Peace Prize should be answered by the White House, not India.

At a press briefing, a reporter asked Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal about claims that Trump helped bring peace in many countries, including India and Pakistan. Jaiswal replied, “It is better to take this question to the White House.”

Earlier in the day, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said that President Trump deserves the Nobel Peace Prize. She claimed he helped stop conflicts in several places around the world—like Thailand and Cambodia, Israel and Iran, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, India and Pakistan, Serbia and Kosovo, and Egypt and Ethiopia.

She added that he helped create about one peace deal per month during his six months in office. “It’s long overdue that he receives the Nobel Peace Prize,” she said.

However, India has always said that peace talks with Pakistan were done directly between the two countries—without outside help. Despite this, he has often said he helped make peace between India and Pakistan, even saying it was linked to trade.

India has denied his claims, but Pakistan has thanked him and even praised his role in the talks.

In June, Pakistan officially nominated Donald Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. They said it was because of his leadership and efforts to help during the tensions with India.

Still, the Nobel Committee in Norway, which decides who wins the Peace Prize, has never made any public comments about his nomination.
